The basic purpose of the No Peek 21 reader is to enable the dealer to determine whether or not the value of his first two cards is twenty-one (21) without having to bend and look at his hole card. This eliminates the need for the dealer to know the exact value of his cards until it is time for the dealer to turn his hand over.
Thus, the No Peek 21 reader is primarily a security device, designed to lessen the probability that a dealer could either work in collusion with an agent at the table or inadvertently give away to the players information about his hand.
An added feature of the No Peek 21 reader is that it can speed up the game and it can eliminate wasted cards which can result in an increased number of hands being able to be dealt in a given period of time.
When the dealer has either an ace or a ten value card as his face card, he inserts the two cards into the No Peek 21 reader which senses the value of the bottom "hole card" and triggers either a red or green light depending on whether the value of the two cards is twenty-one (21) or less. If the value of the two cards is twenty-one (21) the red light on the top of the reader is activated. If the value of the two cards are less than twenty-one (21) the green light on the top of the reader is activated. It is important that the dealer, when inserting the cards into the No Peek 21 reader, inserts them in the correct manner. When the dealer's face card is a ten value card, the dealer must insert the cards length wise into the reader. When the dealers face card is an ace, the dealer must insert the cards width wise into the reader.
The No Peek 21 reader is a patented electronic device. Its power source is a six volt DC rechargeable battery or standard AC power. The device draws current only when the cards are inserted in it activating the sensor switch. The device then draws 35 mA. This results in the typical battery life being three to four years before any recharging is required. Recharging of the battery takes three to four hours.
In order for the No Peek 21 device to operate properly it must be used in conjunction with playing cards which have been specially marked for the use with the No Peek 21 device. These playing cards are available from all major card manufacturers. The markings on the cards consists of black hexagons placed on diagonal corners on all ten value cards and on the aces. On the aces the markings are placed on the opposite corners from where they are placed on the ten value cards.
